Abstract

Learning difficulties that negatively affect the academic performance of students can be seen in many areas such as listening, speaking, understanding, reading, writing and mathematics, and may progress differently for each student. The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of teachers about the methods used in teaching reading and writing to students with learning difficulties. The study group of the research consists of 12 volunteer special education teachers working in Eskisehir province, affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Turkey. Research data were collected with questions prepared using semi-structured interview technique. The opinions of the teachers about the methods, tools, activities, and evaluation processes they use for teaching reading and writing were collected for the study. In the research findings, it was determined that the teachers choose a method in teaching reading and writing by considering individual differences. The research findings were discussed within the framework of the relevant literature, and recommendations for practice and further research were presented.
